A little more of the story

I am a Newfoundlander at heart. 

It all started a few years ago, in the spring of 2007, while I was in university. During my one class my professor was teaching us about different parks, and park systems. He touched on Gros Morne National Park and showed us part of a video that was developed by Parks Canada. This video, called Holding Ground, showed different eco-regions of Gros Morne National Park, and discussed some of the geology and why the park is such a special and interesting place. Throughout the video I experienced the vast landscapes and got a sampling of the local dialects, it all seemed so big and so different from anything I had ever seen before. I just had to see it for myself.

Newfoundland. I’d heard of it before. It is a large Island on the East Coast of Canada. I had only ever been as far as Nova Scotia, and I figured it couldn’t possibly be much farther to Newfoundland. Wrong! Once you get to the most northern harbour in Nova Scotia you must take a ferry across the ocean, for 7-14 hours, depending on the ferry you choose. Alternatively you could drive north through Québec and Labrador and take a much shorter ferry from Blanc-Sablon to St. Barbe. Any way you look at it, it is a long way away. So my need to see Newfoundland was put on the back burner while I focused on finishing my first degree. However, I never stopped thinking about it...
